This was a very special week in Thailand. This last Saturday was the groundbreaking for the Bangkok Thailand temple! It was an incredible day! My companion was lucky enough to be able to go and be a part of the meeting at the temple site. I was able to watch the meeting from our church building. Even though I was a few miles away I could feel the spirit at the meeting. It was amazing to talk to some older members who told us they would have never imagined a temple coming to Thailand. They then expressed their gratitude to the Lord for blessing them with a temple. Elder Gay gave a great talk at the meeting. He said some awesome things which I really enjoyed. He said "God's greatest promises and blessings are received in our temples." "We promise you as this holy edifice is built it will bring God's spirit to this land, it will bring protection to this people, and it will bring God's power to this nation." I feel so happy to be a small part of trying to help build this temple. At one point they had all the missionaries stand up. It was very special to be able to feel the love that all the Thai people have for the missionaries. It was a very powerful meeting.
One evening we were walking around a large apartment building when we walked past a small shop with a man sitting inside. I felt a super distinct impression that I needed to talk to him so we walked right into his shop and just started talking with him. He was a very kind man who seems a little lonely. He was very happy to talk to us. After talking for a while we introduced who we were and the Book of Mormon. He told us he loves reading and loves studying religion. He invited us back to talk later in the week. He has started reading the Book of Mormon and he came to church on Sunday! What a cool miracle!
Other fun things:
- the older lady we helped serve last week has started calling me "Edward" and Elder Aek "Sean." No idea why! She is awesome. She loves Jesus and has awesome faith!
- Thailand's first Taco Bell opened this week
- Thai name of the week: Fat
I found a great quote from Brigham Young while studying about temples and groundbreaking. He said, "Does the Lord require the building of a temple at our hands?” I can say that he requires it just as much as ever he required one to be built elsewhere. If you should ask, “Brother Brigham, have you any knowledge concerning this; have you ever had a revelation from heaven upon it?” I can answer truly, it is before me all the time
We are going to build temples. This law is given to the children of men.
We cannot … administer the further ordinances of God, in the fullest sense of the word, legally unto the people … until we have a temple built for that purpose.
Some say, “I do not like to do it, for we never began to build a temple without the bells of hell beginning to ring.” I want to hear them ring again.
We completed a temple in Kirtland and in Nauvoo; and did not the bells of hell toll all the time we were building them? They did, every week and every day. Do we need a temple? We do, to prepare us to enter in through the gate into the city where the Saints are at rest." I know the "bells of hell" were going off when ground was broken for the temple, but I also know God is sending His angels and miracles to this country to prepare it for a temple. What an awesome time to be a representative in Thailand for Jesus Christ!
